Campaign Primer

Your story begins on Veridia

Welcome to Veridia

You're in the outer spaceport district of Veridia Three. Ships come and go - traders, refugees, privateers, and people looking for work. The resistance won here, but winning was just the beginning. Now everyone's trying to figure out what comes next.

A fixer named Vito has a job for you. Cargo run. Simple enough. The pay is decent, and in this economy, decent is good.

What Came Before

For over two centuries, the Flurnum Imperium ruled most of known space - a militaristic empire that conquered the old Pact Worlds alliance and dismantled its democratic institutions. Originally led by elves, a catastrophic event called the Fleetstravaganza allowed Azlanti human supremacists to seize power, imposing "Human First" policies for the next century.

A year ago, a bioweapon crisis nearly ended everything. Species-targeted neural phages - part of a genocide program called Project Echo - were released across Imperial space, infecting millions. A legendary crew called The Dicks tracked down the cure by uncovering ancient Thri-kreen memory vaults, with numerous shapeshifters on Veridia sacrificing parts of themselves to synthesize it. They made a heroic stand against The Plasmoid Collective at Trellis, defeating their leader Carlito. Their pilot Ray gave his life in the battle. The cure was distributed, but the Imperium shattered in the aftermath.

If you've been scanned at a checkpoint, you can thank the Plasmoid Collective - a faction of shapeshifters that spent decades infiltrating the Imperium by replacing people in positions of power. Their leader Carlito is dead and the Collective is nearly extinct, but the paranoia they created lives on. Bio-scanners are now a fact of life at every spaceport, government building, and half the bars in Veridia.

What You Need to Decide

Your Background

  • -How did you end up on Veridia?
  • -What were you doing before this job?
  • -Are you a local, a refugee, a drifter, or something else?

Your Crew

  • -Do you know the other PCs? How?
  • -Or are you strangers meeting for the first time on this job?

Vito

  • -Have you worked with Vito before?
  • -Do you know him by reputation only?
  • -Is this your first time hearing the name?

The Galaxy You Live In

The Economy

  • - The old Flurnum currency collapsed. Biometrically linked to citizens, it died with the phage.
  • - Credits and barter fill the void. Corporations are hiring because they're the ones with resources.
  • - Veridia is rebuilding. Opportunities exist for those willing to work.

Security

  • - Plasmoid bio-scanners at checkpoints. Standard procedure.
  • - You've probably been scanned dozens of times. It's normal now.
  • - Some private establishments do random scans. Just part of life.

The Mood

  • - Cautious optimism in Veridia. They won.
  • - Uncertainty elsewhere. The old order is gone.
  • - Opportunity for those willing to work.

Character Prompts

Answer these (or at least think about them):

1. What do you think of The Dicks?

Heroes who saved the galaxy
Legends - larger than life
Troublemakers who got lucky
People you've actually met
Never heard of them (unlikely but possible)

2. What do you think of the state of the galaxy?

Better now that the Imperium fell
Worse - at least there was order before
Just different chaos, same problems
Opportunity in the uncertainty
Too busy surviving to have opinions

3. Do you have any allegiances?

The Concord (Voren's faction)
Veridia and the Independent Systems
Trellis and the hardliners
A corporation (which one?)
None - you work for yourself

4. Why are you taking this job?

Money - credits are tight
Adventure - sitting still isn't your style
Nothing better to do
Running from something
Vito asked specifically for you

What Comes Next

Not long after your voyage begins, things go sideways. But that's a story for the table.
